Apple apps in a crossfire
The choice: In March, 2024 the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that would force ByteDance’s TikTok to either divest the social media platform or have it banned in the United States.
Cutting out apps: In April 19, 2024 Apple stated it discontinued Signal, Telegram, Threads and WhatsApp from their App Store in China over national security concerns.
Users at risk: If worse comes to worst for TikTok, an estimated 170 million users in the U.S. will lose access to the app.
Meta on search quarries
Artificial launch: In April 18,2024 Meta officially rolled out its Meta AI/Meta Llama 3.
With who: Meta teamed up with Microsoft and Google to provide results from both companies’ search engines.
Where to use: Meta AI is built into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger apps.
Furry Llama in the wild
Riding on Llama: Meta is open-sourcing its Llama 3 models at 80 billion and 70 billion parameters.
The development: The new models were built and trained on 24,000 GPU clusters.
Opening the gate: While some organizations provide access to its models, they prefer not to open up the source code. However, for Meta it wouldn’t matter if it was closed or not since they are building on top of its existing and new userbase.
