Computing system that fights human disease
The build: The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative announced it will be making a computer system made of 1,000 graphics processing units to analyze both healthy and diseased cells from databases.
Goal: Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan is planning on helping to eradicate human disease by 2100.
That said: “LLMs (large language models) have done an impressive job at helping us understand protein structure, and we think they will be equally great at helping us understand more complex structures like cells,” according to VP of communications Jeff MacGregor at CZI.
Royalty fees hiking up from McDonald’s
The hike: Starting from January 1, 2024, McDonald’s will be raising royalty fees from 4% to 5% (it’s the first time in approximately 3 decade).
The change: McDonald’s will also stop using the term “service fees,” and instead use “royalty fees.”
Affectively: The higher rate will impact new franchisees, buyers of company-owned restaurants, relocated restaurants and other cases that involve the franchisor.
Walmart and other retailers on pets
The other: Walmart is trying out pet services, as it also wants to be a place for veterinarian visits and dog grooming.
According to plan: It will carry the Walmart name, but employees of vet care and pet product company PetIQ will staff it.
Pet friendly: As Americans treat their pets like family members, more large retailers are looking into this space (such as Kohl’s, Lowe’s and among others).
