Global trading currency in question

Breaking point: The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) have consistently pledged to launch a new reserve currency that could replace the greenback (dollar).

The debate: Janet Yellen the 78th United States secretary of the treasury took a defensive stance regarding the US dollar’s role in international trade as presidents from Brazil and South Africa questioned its dominance.

Pressing issue: President of South Africa, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa appeared to back Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, warned the dollar’s dominance could have an adverse effect on poorer countries.

CDC’s internal acknowledgement

Mic drop: As Dr. Rochelle Walensky steps down from the director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, she states “to this day some of our public health data systems‌‌ are reliant on old fax machines,” warning the nation is not prepared for future public health crises.

Holistically: According to Rochelle “It is not enough to support public health when there is an emergency…the roller coaster influx of resources during a‌ crisis, followed by underfunding after the threat is addressed, exposes a broken system‌ and puts future lives at risk.”

The inevitable: Rochelle also said “I want to remind America…the question is not if there will be another public health threat, but when.”

The cost of shipping emission

Overall: Emissions from maritime transportation amount to about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Outlook: World Bank estimates show that a carbon tax on shipping could raise as much as $50 billion to $60 billion a year.

Upfront: Japan, the world’s second largest ship-owning nation, has called for a carbon tax of $56 a tonne of carbon from 2025.
